Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is a rare, rapid and fatal disease of the central nervous system . Death often occurs within 6-12 months of diagnosis . This disease is thought to be caused by prions , which are particles that change our body's proteins into infectious deadly proteins, which results in brain death.

The most common type of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is called sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. This occurs at random with no regard to race or gender. This disease can also come from exposure to infected brain or spinal cord tissue or blood, which can result from exposure to contaminated surgical equipment. Features of this disease include, jerking movements, visual disturbances, problems with walking and balance as well as paranoia . There is currently no cure for Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. It is a devastating illness that often robs its sufferers of their abilities in a very short period. The disorder is rare, only occurring in about 1 out of 1 million people.

In the United Kingdom, the discovery of a new variant of Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease (nvCJD ) was linked to consuming meat from cows infected with Bovine Spongiform Encephalitis (BSE).
