In medicine a symptom is what the patient complains of. For example, a a patient may have symptoms of pain and fatigue. that is very common among people who have healthy brains. So when I evaluate someone for whom this is a major concern, I first try to establish whether the concern is new (the longer they have had it, the less likely it is to be due to dementia), whether they misplace important objects (this bears no relationship to dementia in my experience, but is good to know) and what strategies they employ to find misplaced objects. For all my life, my strategy has been to ask a woman - first my mother, now my wife or my secretary.

There is no known cause but genetics and lifestyle are thought to play a role. reliably get better after treatment. In our experience, however, it is uncommon for the complaint of misplacing objects to improve.
