A neurological disease that affects memory and behaviour. It is characterized by beta-amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the brain. There is no known cause but genetics and lifestyle are thought to play a role.. Most people with severe dementia (from any cause) can no longer read. Often, people with mild Alzheimer's disease can read perfectly well (this can be shown by having them read out loud) but cannot remember what they have read.
