Doctor's DiaryThe loss of writing with Alzheimer’s disease can be fairly characteristic, and I have been interested to observe how, after a certain age, people look for subtle changes especially in the Christmas cards of older correspondents. Still, this is a poor way to diagnose dementia. I am sure that some people with dementia unnecessarily inhibit themselves from written communication, such as Christmas cards. People who have difficulty with accepting themselves as less than perfect will have problems here, as in other ways that the illness affect them. They always strike me as seeming to suffer so much more than the people who somehow can find a way to celebrate what remains good for them in their lives.
