Front-line faltering in Alzheimers battle: Goar

Tired of waiting for governments to respond to the rising tide of dementia, the Alzheimer Society stepped into the breach.

Andrea Nicholson winces when she hears nurses, home care workers and therapists speak to people with dementia in a babyish voice. And how are we today? she says, raising her voice an octave and patting an imaginary seniors arm.

It is one of the first things the public educator coordinator at theAlzheimer Society of Torontoteaches caregivers not to do. Infantilizing adults with dementia compounds the indignity of the disease.

Nicholson works with a six-member team that offers skills training toprofessional caregivers nurses, social workers, physiotherapists, personal support workers and food servers whose clients are in various states of dementia.
