Financial Management | Doctor's Diary

Problems with finances are common early in the course of many dementias. Bad financial decisions range from the minor to the disastrous, and often there is no good way to reverse them. This is something that is also known to unscrupulous people who prey on older adults with minor memory difficulties. We commonly hear stories of people with Alzheimer's disease who are suddenly befriended by others who will ask for 'loans' or engage in other potentially abusive behaviours. Such people can be charming and very manipulative. Often they try to undermine the relationship that the person with Alzheimer's disease has with their family.
