Travel and Vacationing | Management Strategies

  1. Remember that travel and vacationing usually means unfamiliar settings and events that may be overwhelming to the person you care for. Try and maintain consistency and familiarity as much as possible. Keep daily routines as much as possible the same. Eat, bathe, and sleep at similar times when you are traveling as to when you are at home. As well, consider other things that could make traveling more comfortable for the person you care for. If they enjoy a particular type of food, or fast food restaurant, make an effort to eat there when traveling.

  2. Make sure that you have allotted plenty of time when traveling or vacationing. There is nothing more stressful than feeling rushed and trying to hurry the person you care for. Leave plenty of time between flight changes, or bus changes. If you are traveling internationally, make sure that you have ample time to go through customs and immigration. As well, during the vacation itself, do not try and cram too much in the days. Make sure that there is time for the person you care for to rest and relax every day. This will help them from becoming agitated or anxious if they are tired.

  3. If the person you care for becomes agitated easily, try and avoid places with a lot of noise and stimulation. For example, avoid large cities, busy restaurants or staying with a big family. As well, consider other ways to make things easier on the person you care for. For example, if you are going to be sightseeing, try going to see them early in the morning before the big crowds form.

  4. If the person you care for has a tendency to wander away, make sure you take the proper safety precautions. Make sure that the person you care for is carrying proper identification, and has appropriate contact information. It is also important to include the location and phone number of the place you are staying at.

  5. Remember that delays are a common part of travel. Try and keep some form of distraction on hand to help pass the time. Books, cards, or crosswords are all great ways to keep the person you care for occupied during a delay. This will help keep them from getting anxious or distressed.

  6. Simple is better. Keep travel and vacations short and sweet. This will help keep the person you care for from becoming upset or anxious if they are away from their home for too long.
