This is usually present early in Alzheimer's disease , although it generally only is demonstrated by formal questioning. Many families believe that there is no problem with the long term memory of the people they care for, 'Their long-term memory is perfect; you can ask them anything'. This is in contrast to recent memory , where problems are usually obvious to caregivers. But in the clinical examination, it is usually the case that important details of long term memory have been lost.
