Misplacing or Losing Objects | Doctor's Diary

Like complaints about recent memory , the complaint of misplacing objects is another symptom that is very common among people who have healthy brains. So when I evaluate someone for whom this is a major concern, I first try to establish whether the concern is new (the longer they have had it, the less likely it is to be due to dementia), whether they misplace important objects (this bears no relationship to dementia in my experience, but is good to know) and what strategies they employ to find misplaced objects. For all my life, my strategy has been to ask a woman - first my mother, now my wife or my secretary.

Many symptoms of Alzheimer's disease reliably get better after treatment. In our experience, however, it is uncommon for the complaint of misplacing objects to improve.
