Loss of reading ability is typical of the late mild/early moderate stage of Alzheimer's disease . Most people with severe dementia (from any cause) can no longer read. Often, people with mild Alzheimer's disease can read perfectly well (this can be shown by having them read out loud) but cannot remember what they have read.
